Mom frets about             me

So how can I tell her            as

she waits for an answer           while

rubbing ointment over open wounds     while

more questions build on her tongue      as

she worries about lasting           scars?

Panic Calls

Mom calls Dad. Over and over.

Curses because he’s somewhere unreachable.

Amazon rainforest? Down Under? Alaska?

She slams her phone on the table hard enough to crack

the screen. Why won’t the call go through?

She runs her hands through her hair.

I’ll call your uncle Vent.

I go to my bedroom. Close the door.

Pace around. And around.

Spot my beanie on the shelf.

Grab it. Yank it on my head.

Mom bursts in. Sees my hat.

Hand flies to her mouth.

Your uncle wants to talk to you.

She holds out the phone. I take it.
